What is Hypnotherapy?

You may think that Hypnotherapy is practise shrouded in mystery; a procedure that has its place in the performance arsenal of your average stage magician. Don’t worry, you aren’t alone in this assumption. In fact, Hypnotherapy is probably one of the most widely misunderstood therapies in use today. As a clinical practise it can be effectively utilised alongside mainstream medicine as an alternative and/or complimentary therapy to help patients with a variety of psychological disorders. But what exactly is hypnotherapy, how does it work, and what are its applications?

Simply put hypnotherapy is a form of hypnosis that works to cause the brain to enter an altered state of consciousness. The name of the practise itself and hypnosis forms the basis of this practise.

Hypnosis is used as part of the hypnotherapy process in order to cause the brain to enter a highly-focused state of concentration and attentiveness, with associated states of relaxation and increased suggestiveness often being observed as a result. This increased suggestibility makes the brain more receptive to the suggestions and recommendations made during state of altered consciousness, which are then intended to take effect after the hypnotherapy session has ended and the patient has emerged from the hypnotic state.

Hypnotherapy is not utilised as a mainstream medical practise but is sometimes prescribed or sought out by patients themselves as an alternative or complimentary therapy to help them with their affliction. It can be used to treat a wide range of disorders, but perhaps the most common (and most commonly-known) is its use in breaking bad or damaging habits. It isn’t limited to bad habits however, since it is also used as a treatment for insomnia, for recalling memories thought to be lost or difficult to recover, and there are even instances of hypnosis being used as anaesthetic where it is intended as a primary or secondary form of anaesthesia to allow patients to undergo surgical procedures that are unwilling or unable to undergo traditional anaesthesia by standard drug-based means.
